The property offers a variety of live water including a pond with dock, bold mountain streams, small waterfalls, and more than a dozen springs. See Attachments for more details!!!
Have you ever read the "Not So Big House" series of books by Sarah Susanka? In them, she advocates the transition from our traditional thinking that bigger is better and that every home must be a McMansion. In her way of thinking, quality and design trump size. I find her approach enticing, especially as I mature, because I am coming to realize that the quality and design of mylifestyleis affected positively or negatively by the quality and design of my home.Having been there, done that, and gotten the t-shirt with large homes and large properties, a few years ago my husband and I made the transition to a townhome. Granted, its free-standing and looks like any other single-family home in any traditional neighborhood, so it doesntfeellike a townhome. The trick is that the lawn is maintained by the homeowners association - which also owns the lawn, by the way so while we enjoy green space all around our home, our required involvement in its care is minimal. Now, if I choose, I could use the existing planting beds to plant annuals and perennials to my hearts content. Instead, I satisfy myself with container gardening, and each year, the number of containers seems to get smaller. After all, I live in a gorgeous corner of North Carolina smack dab among the peaks and folds of the Blue Ridge mountains. No one gardens like Mother Nature, and all I have to do to enjoy her bounty is to take a walk. Easy peasy. So, what is my point with all of this? Well, its this: If you find any of this not so big lifestyle stuff intriguing, Id like to tell you about a home that just went on the market. Its in my neighborhood and offers the same lifestyle choices I talked about earlier. Now, read on for the standard description.Live the peaceful and simple life you dream of in this jewelbox of a home. Enjoy the first warm rays of the sun with your morning coffee on the spacious and private deck. Take a walk along quiet streets with sidewalks or choose the wooded trail through generously-preserved open space. Along the way, say hello to your neighbors and their pets, as you all enjoy the natural beauty of this mountain setting.Located in a highly-regarded neighborhood in an excellent location, this immaculate home is graced with lush, mature landscaping complemented by pleasing views of park-like open space. Use your time to enjoy life, because in this free-standing townhome, the lawn is maintained by the homeowners' association and the professionally-landscaped beds are already nicely planted with many specimen trees and shrubs. If, however, you love to garden, many planting beds await your green thumb.Inside the home, beauty and comfort abound. The entry, great room and kitchen have beautiful hardwood floors. The bathrooms and laundry room have tile floors, and bedrooms have like-new berber carpet. The great room has built-ins, a wood-burning fireplace outfitted with gas logs (so very nice on those cool mountain mornings and evenings), a vaulted ceiling with beautiful crown molding, a bay window in the dining area, and a wall of windows overlooking the private back yard.Open to the great room, the kitchen is compact and complete with all you need: ample counter space, a window over the sink, beautiful cherry cabinets, and a useful built-in desk area for your home management tasks. Adjacent to the kitchen is a large laundry room with a window, built-in shelving and a door to the side-load garage, with its extra built-in storage closets.Tasteful finishes and soothing colors enhance this well-constructed home, built by one of the area's most respected builders. The master suite has a walk-in closet as well as a second closet, a bay window, a door to the deck, and a master bath with a deep soaking tub, a separate walk-in, tiled shower, and double sinks. The second bedroom does perfect double-duty as a den with its built-in desk. Nicely-sized, it can easily accommodate overnight guests, as well, with room for a sleep sofa and a second closet for guests' belongings.Im sure youve heard the phrase location, location, location. Well, this home epitomizes that phrase, as its located on a large corner lot in a quiet neighborhood (Dunroy on Rutledge) in the charming and historic village of Flat Rock. Less than two miles away is one of the souths favorite towns, Hendersonville, NC. In an area known for its natural beauty and near-perfect weather, Flat Rock/Hendersonville offers a host of festivals (Garden Festival in May, Apple Festival in September, Arts Festival in October), theaters (including North Carolinas State Theatre, Flat Rock Playhouse), restaurants, and galleries and shops. Of course, basic necessities like food and medical care are plentiful and nearby. With so much to do around town, it may be difficult to leave. But, if you do, the small and unique cities of Asheville, NC and Greenville, SC are less than an hour away. The larger cities of Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA are two and three hours away, respectively. And, amazingly, the lovely cities and beach areas of Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA are a mere mornings drive away. Have morning coffee in the mountains and enjoy lunch at the beach! What could be more perfect than that!?Please feel free to contact me if youd like more information. I am happy to help. You can also visit108 Dunroy Drivefor more details and a complete photo gallery. From Flat Rock, Im wishing you a joyful day.

Although the tax records state it was built in 1910, based on further research, it was built sometime between 1916 -1917. This information documented below was gleaned from different sources including public records, direct conversations with JCJr Sossomanin 2005, prior owners and the current owner's discovery. Past Owner History: In August 26,1916, three acres of land was purchased by Mrs. Annie Lee Heath on the corner of Broadway Street (now Broadway Ave) and Heath Street (now Abbey Dale) from J B Green and PJ Hartsell for $300. Annie was the wife of O. P. Heath, president/owner of the Charlotte Cotton Exchange. Annie built the house after O. P.'s death. "Osgood Pierce Heath was a big-time speculator internationally, especially in cotton and msugar through his cotton brokerage, O.P. Heath & Co. He filed for bankruptcy in 1911 with liabilities exceeding $1 million, a great sum at that time. Four years later, Heath nearly cornered the world cotton market but his Liverpool partner betrayed him. He committed suicide March 2, 1916. An obituary cited 'ill health and financial reverses.'" Sometime between 1917 and 1922 (I think around 1918), M. W. Harris - Vice President at the local Midland Bank- purchased the home. He came under financial stress after the bank started to fail. In 1923, Dr. John Calvin Sossoman (1881-1937) and his wife, Lola Carol Sossoman(1893-1982), purchased the house and land from Mr. Harris for $4,000. The Sossoman's raised two children, JCJr (1919-2010) and Sara (1922-1999) in the house. In 1925, Dr. Sossoman purchased 3 adjacent acres from the Mr. Green and Mr. Hartsell. This brought the total acreage to 6 acres. Although I haven't researched it, our neighbor Jack Hartsell (in his 80s) was probably related to Mr. Hartsell. The house was originally built with a wrap-around porch. However during the 1920s, the sunroom was added. That is the only significant addition made to the house since it was built. Per JC Jr in 2005, no additional rooms were ever added to the house. JC Jr also mentioned that the brick building in the back yard was originally constructed to house an electric generator. So in the little town of Midland, the local doctor had a 4000 square foot home that had electricity. I'm sure this would have been a very impressive site at the time. Dr. Sossoman's practiced medicine at the brick building on the corner of Broadway Ave and Northside Ave. It is marked by a date above the front door. In 1937, tragedy struck the Sossoman family when Dr. Sossoman died of appendicitis. At some point after his death, Mrs. Sossoman started renting some of the bedrooms to boarders to generate income. In 1940, Mrs. Sossoman sold about 1 acre to a family and it changed hands several times . In 1948, the 1 acre property was sold to Howard and Alene Tomberlin. Alene still lives on that property in the brick house. At some point the Tomberlin's sold a portion of the property to Alene's sister, Shirley, and her husband. Although Shirley currently lives in an assisted care facility, she still owns the white house. As an interesting side note, Howard and Alene spent their wedding night in the library upstairs, which was a bedroom at the time. Mrs. Sossaman lived in the house until she died in 1982. Most of the neighbors that live on Broadway Ave. knew Mrs. Sossoman personally. One neighbor (currently in his 50s) said when he was a child, Mrs. Sossaman would occasionally lock herself out of the house and she would pay him a dime to climb through a window and let her in. The property originally had a spring and cistern by the large oak tree in the very back of the farm. A maid would come once a week and walk through the field to the back of the farm to wash their clothes in the cistern. She would then return the clean clothes to the house and hang them on the line to dry. As a boy, JCJr. decided to bring the family's milk cow into the house. Past owners of the house mentioned seeing the hoof prints on the first floor, prior the floors being refinished. Dr. Sossaman and Lola were both long time members of Mill Grove United Methodist Church on the corner of Alpine and Highway 601. Both are buried in that cemetery. Now for some house facts: No rooms other than the sunroom have ever been added to the house. The laundry room was originally a covered back porch but at some point was enclosed. The downstairs ceilings were originally bead board and were 10 feet in height. The two large doors In the library upstairs are original to the house and hung between the living and dining rooms. The original hardware is located in the shop. A doorway use to exist from the kitchen to the stair stoop. It was enclosed at some point to install additional kitchen cabinets. The windows on the house were 4 lights over 1 light. You can see the original top sash in the barn above the chicken coop door. The original exterior doors from the front and side entry ways are stored in the loft of the barn. The door from the master bedroom to the master bath is original to the house. However, it had been stored in the barn for a long time. When the bathroom was renovated, the door was completely refinished and installed in its present location. The library (aka honeymoon suite) originally had a door, which can be found in the attic. All of the bathroom doors, upstairs doors, and doors to the master bedroom are original to the house. The knobs for the sunroom doors, the door leading from the hallway to the master bedroom, the door leading from the hallway to the master bathroom are original to the house. There was originally a doorway leading from the hallway to the office. At some point it was enclosed and the French doors were added. Prior to the French doors being installed, only a wall existed. All of the heart-pine floors are original, as are the stair treads, balusters, rails and spindles. The closets in the upstairs bathroom are original to the house. The master bedroom never had a built-in closet. All of the porches' ceilings, railings and columns are original to the house. The roof originally had shake shingles. The surface of the well's water starts 17 feet below the ground and is 22 deep, for a total depth of 39 feet. The brick pile behind the garage was part of the original chimney.
